May Day Printable and Basket

Next Monday is May Day, and this year I’m featuring a new printable and twine basket craft. This is a gift tag featuring a cute flower arrangement in a mason jar.  The printable has six color combinations so you can have fun mixing and matching them with your baskets.  If you need to make some baskets, I have a cute basket craft made from empty yogurt cups and twine that looks perfect with the printable.  The possibilities of what you can do with these baskets are endless…you can fill the cups up with candy, you can punch a few holes in the bottom of the cup and add a plant, etc.  If you want to see other May Day ideas, check out my May Day posts from previous years: Printable May Day Gift Tag and Caramel Puffcorn, Free May Day Printables, and May Day Basket Ideas.

To make the May Day baskets, start by taking empty yogurt cups and punching a hole in each side.

Then tie a piece of string through the holes to make a handle.

Now take your hot glue gun and glue the twine around the cup while wrapping the twine around it. Use a popsicle stick or spoon to push the twine up to avoid burning your fingers since the glue is hot.  Note, an adult should do this step if children are helping out.

Once you cut the string, you’re done with the basket.   Now attach your free printable. This is a great way to create fun gifts and recycle plastic yogurt cups.

May Day 2016 1

May Day is almost here and this year I’m featuring a new printable.  It is a gift tag in a traditional pink pastel color on a chalkboard background with a scalloped eyelet border.  You can attach the card to a brown paper lunch sack (like I have shown) then attach the separate scalloped border to the folded over edge of your bag.  The nice thing about using paper bags is they are inexpensive, and they won’t tip over like the plastic cups do when you try to deliver them around the neighborhood.  Thinking about giving people a small plant on May Day?  Just fold down one of your brown lunch sacks and set a small plant in the bag and then attach the printable.   Another great way to use this printable is to attach it to any cup or basket.  The possibilities are endless!  Note, I have also included a recipe for Caramel Puffcorn that I found on Old Dutch’s website.  It is easy to make and it is the perfect alternative to traditional popcorn for filling your bags.  And, if you still need May Day ideas check out my past May Day posts:  Free May Day Printables and May Day Basket Ideas.

Caramel Puffcorn

First you preheat your oven to 250 degrees and then  heat 1 cup of butter, 1 1/4 cups of brown sugar and 2/3 cup of light corn syrup in a pan until melted stirring constantly.

butter, corn syrup, and brown sugar

Once it is melted, add the 1 teaspoon of baking soda. The recipe says it will foam, but mine didn’t foam it just looked like the following picture.

topping Pour the  9 oz. bag of Old Dutch Puffcorn in a large roaster and then add the melted caramel mixture over it.  Stir until it covers the puffcorn.

Now bake the puffcorn uncovered in the oven for 45 minutes and stir it every 10 to 15 minutes.  When it is done, pour it on sheets of wax paper and let it cool and dry.  When it is cool, you can break the pieces apart and put them in your May Day baskets.  Then add all of your other May Day goodies to your bags.

May Day Gift Tags 4May 1st is only three days away!  And if you have kids, you probably will wake up and realize it is May Day then look around the house for paper cups and pipe cleaners in a frantic attempt to make May baskets.  I know this feeling since that’s what I usually do.  But this year I have this handy-dandy printable so I am set and so are you.  All you need to have is paper, plastic baggies, and tape.  With each page you print out you will get a printable cone to hold popcorn, candy, or flowers and two gift tags that you can put on the cone, a basket, or the traditional paper cups.  Take a look at the cone image below.

may basket 2 Below is a picture of the gift tag on a little basket.may basket tag 1You have many options with this printable.  The kids will have so much fun printing them out and filling their baskets.  To make the cone, all you have to do is print out a page on regular paper or card-stock.  Then cut the cone out with sissors, overlap the tab in back and tape the cone together.  I think clear tape works better than glue because you would have to wait for the glue to dry and it may not hold as well.  Then fill up a ziploc or cellophane bag with popcorn and candy as you can see at my house we love the store-bought fluorescent cheese colored popcorn, but feel free to use anything you want to fill the cones. Just make sure not to overfill them.  Fill them in a slim cone shape.

cone and candy bagThen punch two holes in each side of the cone for a handle; I used twine but you could use a pipe cleaner, curling ribbon, or any string.  Then put the bag inside of the cone and tape it to the cone. This makes them easier to transport to your family, friends, neighbors, and co-workers.

May Day Basket Ideas

May-Day-Basket-Ideas-w

May Day is already tommorow!  Want to have a fun project with your kids?  Here’s some great ideas that will help you put a smile on your friends and family members’ faces.  We have a mini-apple pie basket recipe that is perfect for those who want to bake something fun and special for their baskets.  I love making these cute little pies; they are easy to make and they are packed with fresh apples!  YUM!

We also have a great plant basket idea that is perfect for those who want to give flowers etc.  I love to garden, which is why I really enjoy creating baskets with plants.  For this project all you have to do is buy some plants and make a pipe cleaner handle for each basket.  Another creative way to make your plant baskets extra special is to buy vegetable, fruit, or herb plants and include a recipe that uses the plant you are giving in your May Day baskets.  For example, if you are making a strawberry plant May basket, you could include a printout of a Strawberry Pie recipe and tie it to the basket with a ribbon.

Below are steps to making these great May Day baskets: a mini-apple pie basket and a creative plant basket.

Mini-Apple Pie Baskets

Apple Pie BasketsThese cute heart covered handleless baskets are sure to brighten anyone’s May Day.  Fill up a basket and take them to work or to a neighbor; I’m sure your day will be filled with smiles.

First you start by chopping six apples into bite size pieces.chopped-apples-wNow mix your apples with 3/4 cup of sugar, 2 tablespoons of flour, 3/4 teaspoon of ground cinnamon, 1/4 teaspoon of salt, 1/8 teaspoon of nutmeg and 1 tablespoon of lemon juice.

Now mix all of the ingredients together until combined.

apples-and-spoon-wNow set the apple mixture aside.  Then get out your ready-made refrigerated pie crusts (a box with two crusts in it).  Unroll one of the crusts and cut out 12 small hearts.  I know what your thinking… you don’t have a small heart cookie cutter.  You can get a 3 heart set at Hobby Lobby or just cut out each heart with a knife.

In a 375 degree preheated oven bake the baskets for 25-30 minutes.  Cool them on a wire rack.  Now you are ready to share for May Day.

Plant Baskets

viola-2-w

Another easy idea for a May Basket is place a few flowering plants or vegetables (that you bought at a store) in a cup and add a pipe cleaner handle.

First you punch two holes in your paper cup.putting-holes-in-cups-w

Now place 2 plants from a 6 cell plant container in each cup. You don’t need to get any extra dirt, because they wedge down in the small cup nicely.  Now put two pipe cleaners together and bend them through the holes in the cups.  And there you have it!  You have a basket worthy of handing out on May Day.

strawberry-plant-w

The next plant basket that you can make is also made with a plant purchased at the store. You just add a pipe cleaner handle to it and tape a piece of black construction paper to the plant.punching-hole-in-strawberry-plant-w

Then decorate the construction paper with chalk or stickers.  You could go even one step further by including a print out of a Strawberry Pie recipe and tie it to the handle of the basket.

You can also use herbs and add a recipe that uses that herb in it.  This is a great project to do with kids.  They love creating the baskets and handing them out.  Have a great May Day!
